Fifth grade students at Evergreen Junior High are wrapping up a unit on the impact of weather on the water cycle. They learned about hurricane Katrina and the devastating effects on the coastal city. Students were placed into groups and chose a team leader. Each student had a specific engineering job they had to learn, consider, and present their solutions on how to save a beach town from a hurricane. The teams were then given a budget and they had to problem solve how to save as many historical buildings as possible while staying at or under budget! Real world problems with real world constraints means more students prepared for their future wherever that may take them!
